Martin began his music studies at an early age, learning piano, and singing in the local school, church and festival choirs. At secondary school he added violin and latterly cello to his portfolio, performing widely with the town orchesta. Martin studied music at UCW Aberystwyth, composing, and performing as accompanist and instrumentalist. Here he also joined the prestigious Elizabethan Madrigal Singers, and has for many years since performed in and organised small vocal groups mostly specialising in a capella music, primarily early music from 4 parts to 40. |

He has a particular interest in the wealth of vocal music available that does not normally get a sufficient airing. When Martin created Singers of Note in 1997 as a one-off birthday celebration, he entered a new phase, developing a workshop style that proved so popular that the following year it was suggested he repeat the process. Since then it has grown into an annual event, developed a monthly offshoot where a core group meets to sing socially or travel to enjoy a workshop day with other singers in different parts of the country, and yet further into residential weekend events. Amongst Martin's other musical engagements, he has accepted invitations to conduct groups around the UK from University Choirs to Early Music Fora workshops. He is also the current Musical Director of Northern Voices, a group based in the Stockport and Hayfield area, and is a local organist and choirmaster in the Chorley area. Though he now spends a lot more time leading, he still finds time to perform vocally and instrumentally. He is part of an octet in the Chesterfield area, and regularly guests with local choirs, workshops, and charity choral events.
